The Fisheries Act and Regulations
The Fisheries Act was enacted in 1986, and was followed a year later by the Fisheries Regulations.
Over the years amendments have been to the Act itself, as well as to the Regulations. This is done
when there is a need to render the fisheries legislation more efficient.
The Fisheries Act is currently under review.
The main purpose of the fisheries legislation is to provide the legal basis for management of fisheries in Seychelles.
It therefore defines what fishing entails, assigns responsibility for the management of the different fisheries and
also grants the necessary powers to control their exploitation. To some extent the legislation contains the actual
rules governing exploitation of that resource as well as creating a legal framework for more detailed rule-making.
