In a significant effort to foster regional cooperation and promote sustainable fishing practices, the Seychelles Fisheries Authority (SFA) welcomed a group of nine fishermen from Rodrigues Island on Tuesday 19th August 2025. This visit is part of a broader initiative facilitated by the Commission for Industrial Development of Rodrigues, aimed at enhancing the exchange of knowledge, ideas, and best practices among fishing communities in the region.
The primary objective of this exchange program is to encourage the sharing of good practices emerging from the fishing industry, enabling fishers from Rodrigues and Seychelles to discuss challenges, explore innovative solutions, and advocate for responsible and sustainable fishing. Such collaborations are vital for strengthening regional fisheries management and promoting a resilient fishing sector that benefits both communities.
During their visit to SFA, the Rodrigues fishers were given an insightful tour of the Victoria fishing port, where they had the opportunity to meet and exchange experiences with local fishers. They observed firsthand the operational aspects of Seychelles’ fishing industry and enjoyed lively discussions about various fishing practices. During the tour of the port, they got a chance to witness one of SFA’s ice plant facilities in operation.
The visitors also attended presentations from the Fisheries Research Department and the Fisheries Resource Management Department. Eager to learn, they expressed particular interest in Seychelles’ regulatory measures and management strategies, seeking ideas that they could adapt and implement in their own country. They were also welcomed aboard SFA’s research vessel, L’amitie, and met the crew.
Continuing their immersive experience, the fishers visited the port at Providence, gaining a closer look at Seychelles’ semi-industrial fishing infrastructure. They also toured the aquaculture facilities, gaining insights into sustainable fish farming practices that could contribute to diversifying their local fisheries.
The interaction was marked by enthusiasm and curiosity, with the Rodrigues fishers posing intriguing questions and reacting positively to Seychelles’ practices. They highlighted their willingness to foster ongoing exchanges and expressed openness to hosting SFA’s staff for visits to Rodrigues.
This visit exemplifies the benefits of regional cooperation in the fisheries sector, emphasizing the importance of shared knowledge and mutual support.
