In a significant move for the fisheries sector, Seychelles Fisheries Authority (SFA) officially launched the first-ever SFA Fish Market Award. The award aims to recognize and promote excellence in hygiene, product quality, customer service, and environmental practices among fish markets across the islands.
The launch was done by the Chief Executive Officer of SFA Dr. Jan Robinson, who emphasized Seychelles’ strong international reputation for high-quality fisheries products, “Across our islands, fish markets have shown great potential, but some still struggle with consistency in hygiene, product quality, customer service, and environmental practices. These areas matter deeply; they influence consumer health, shape the experience of our visitors, and reflect the values we stand for as an industry committed to excellence and sustainability.” he said.
The SFA Fish Market Award is envisioned as a catalyst for uplifting industry standards, offering both recognition and incentives for market operators and fishermen dedicated to maintaining high hygiene standards and providing exceptional service to customers. The award will run for one year, commencing immediately and culminating on World Fisheries Day 2026, when the top-performing fish market will be honored.
For its inaugural edition, five markets have been automatically qualified for the award. These markets, namely the Anse Royale, Anse aux Pins, Cascade, Anse Étoile, and Baie Ste Anne Praslin, were designed and funded by the SFA through European Union Sectoral Support and are currently managed by fully established fishers’ associations. This selection reflects the commitment of these markets to maintaining best practices and improving the overall quality of their services.
The launch of the SFA Fish Market Award marks a pivotal step toward enhancing the fishing industry in Seychelles. It encourages market operators to strive for excellence and reinforces the importance of customer satisfaction and sustainable practices. As this initiative takes flight, it promises to positively impact not only the fishing sector but also the lives of those who rely on it for their livelihoods.
