On Friday, 08th May 2026, the Seychelles Fisheries Authority(SFA) brought the streets of Victoria to life with a colorful and educational Tuna Day Parade in celebration of World Tuna Day, observed annually on 02nd May.

The lively event highlighted the vital importance of the tuna industry to Seychelles’ economy, food security, and national heritage, while raising awareness among the younger generation about the value of sustainable fisheries.

Primary school students took centre stage during the parade, proudly dressed in creative tuna-themed costumes as they marched through Victoria, spreading messages about ocean conservation and the significance of tuna to the country. Participants gathered at the National Library before making their way through the streets of Victoria and ending the parade at the SFA Headquarters at Fishing Port.

One of the most heartwarming highlights of the event was the diversity of participants involved. The youngest participant was just 2 years old, while the oldest participant was 70 years old, showcasing how fisheries and ocean stewardship unite generations.

Following the parade, participants and visitors were treated to an exciting educational fair hosted at the SFA Headquarters. The fair combined learning and entertainment through interactive exhibitions and games designed to educate the public about tuna fisheries and marine science.

Several SFA teams showcased their work during the exhibition, including the Sampling Team, Scientific Observers, and Fisheries Research section, providing visitors with insight into the important scientific and monitoring work carried out to support sustainable tuna fisheries in Seychelles.

The fair also featured a range of fun and engaging activities such as “Guess the Weight,” “Tuna Hunt,” “Untangle the Tuna,” and “Hooks and Ladders,” which kept children and adults entertained throughout the afternoon.

The celebrations ended on a sweet note with a tuna-themed piñata, much to the delight of the young participants.

Through initiatives such as the Tuna Day Parade and Educational Fair, the Seychelles Fisheries Authority continues to promote public awareness on the importance of sustainable tuna fisheries while inspiring future generations to appreciate and protect the country’s rich marine resources.
