The Aquaculture Department within the Seychelles Fisheries Authority (SFA) on Friday 24th July 2026 hosted its second Sea Cucumber Stock Enhancement Assessment Workshop, bringing together stakeholders to share the latest progress and discuss the future of the project.
Held at the STC Conference Room, the workshop highlighted key achievements and lessons learned so far. Participants were given an overview of the different sites surveyed for suitable sea cucumber habitats, including Remire, St Anne and St Joseph Atoll. Fieldwork has not been without its challenges.
From rough seas and low tides limiting access to lagoons, to poor underwater visibility, remote island logistics and security restrictions, the team has had to overcome a range of obstacles while carrying out surveys. Despite these challenges, the project has delivered encouraging results. Researchers reported that the successful rearing of sandfish demonstrates the potential for sea cucumber stock enhancement in Seychelles and provides a solid foundation for future work.
Funded by the SeyCCAT programme with a budget of SCR2 million, the project continues to contribute to sustainable fisheries management and the long-term conservation of Seychelles’ valuable marine resources.
